The goal of teacher training is to provide tips, tools, and ideas for teaching yoga to students who have eating disorders. There are a few poses that may not work well for people with anorexia (for example) at least not without a little tweaking. There is language, sometimes typical in many yoga classes that could be problematic; likewise, there are things teachers can say to be very helpful. In addition, there is a goal to help teachers become more trauma-sensitive or at least trauma-informed. This is helpful, not only for students with eating disorders but also for students who may have symptoms of anxiety or depression.

The training is typically about 5 hours long and is very interactive. We have information about different types of eating disorders and potential causes along with the limits of what a yoga teacher can legaly do. we talk about trauma and the part it plays in eating disorders along with the specifics of PTSD. Of course, we talk about how and why yoga can be so helpful in recovery from eating disorders. We try not to have too much straight lecturing so it's very broken up with practices showing how a trauma-sensitive class might look/sound. We also try to give time for participants to practice some teaching techniques.

Most important, none of these techniques is nearly as important as the presence of the teacher. Therefore, we encourage participants to look honestly at their own stories. It's so important to have compassion and understanding for yourself before you can deal with the issues of others.
